چکیده

A dams's thesis about indicative conditionals is that their assertIlability goes by the conditional subjective probability of the consequent given the antecedent, in very much the same way that assertability normally goes by the subjective probability of truth.' The thesis is well established; the remaining question is how it may best be explained. The nicest explanation would be that the truth conditions of indicative conditionals are such as to guarantee the equality

Comprehension of factual, nonfactual, and counterfactual conditionals by Iranian EFL learners

A considerable amount of studies have been established on conditional reasoning supporting mental model theory of propositional reasoning. Mental model theory proposed by Johnson- larid and Byrne is an explanation of someone's thought process about how something occurs in the real world. Conditional reasoning as a kind of reasoning is the way to speak about possibilities or probabilities. The a...

The Fall of "Adams' Thesis"?

The so-called ̳Adams‘ Thesis‘ is often understood as the claim that the assertibility of an indicative conditional equals the corresponding conditional probability—schematically: (AT) As(A  B) = P(B | A), provided P(A) ≠ 0. The Thesis is taken by many to be a touchstone of any theorizing about indicative conditionals. Yet it is unclear exactly what the Thesis is. I suggest some precise stateme...

Conditionals, Probability, and Belief Revision (preliminary Version) Conditionals, Probability, and Belief Revision (preliminary Version)*

A famous result obtained in the mid-seventies by David Lewis shows that a straightforward interpretation of probabilities of conditionals as conditional probabilities runs into serious trouble. In this paper we try to circumvent this trouble by defining extensions of probability functions, called conditional probability functions. We further defend the position that rational partial beliefs (ab...

Placing Probabilities of Conditionals in Context

In this paper I defend the tenability of the Thesis that the probability of a conditional equals the conditional probability of the consequent given the antecedent. This is done by adopting the view that the interpretation of a conditional may differ from context to context. Several triviality results are (re-)evaluated in this view as providing natural constraints on probabilities for conditio...

Nonmonotonic conditionals that behave like conditional probabilities above a threshold

I’ll describe a range of systems for nonmonotonic conditionals that behave like conditional probabilities above a threshold. The rules that govern each system are probabilistically sound in that each rule holds when the conditionals are interpreted as conditional probabilities above a threshold level specific to that system. The well-known preferential and rational consequence relations turn ou...
